That is my gospel.” • “Think of the press as a great keyboard on which the government can play.” The American election of 2008 shows that an individual who had never been in charge of anything, who had no experience in working for the government, other than being a U.S. Senator (from January 2005 until November 2008), could be, and was, elected to be the 44 th President of the United States of America. Obama began his campaign for President after just two years in public office. There are a series of reasons why he won, not least that his opponent, John McCain, was perceived to be an old man with old ideas. Obama, who was born in 1961, was young, and supposedly had fresh ideas. This was the persona that was created and sold, despite the fact that Obama’s lack of experience meant that his ideas were more a product of a marketing campaign than of real-world practicality. The aura that was created by the electioneering and advertising world dominated the campaign, and people, who in the best of times are not particularly bright, were swayed.
