Aankomst van koning Willem I, Scheveningen, 30 November, 1819, (“Arrival of King Willem I, Scheveningen”) by Nicolaas Lodewijk Penning.

Simultaneously, Willem was appointed as the governor-general of what is now Belgium, as well as being made the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, having traded the lands comprising his German lands, including Nassau, for Luxembourg. He was then the first person to have combined the territories of the “Low Countries”, now known by the abbreviation “Benelux” (Belgium, Nederland, Luxembourg). To be clear though, the actual political group, the Benelux Union, was only created during World War II, as a very loose form of the United Kingdom of England, Scotland and Wales.)
