Five Brothers and a War

Move to Den Haag

There were a few occasions when the boys’ grandfathers visited the family. However, this was a great rarity at the new house on the Margrietstraat. What was unique was to have both grandfathers over at the same time. In this photo, from left to right, are Bertus, Leendert’s father, also Leendert van Pelt, Tante (“Aunt”) Mina, Tante Hes, Kees (with the cat) and Marie’s father, Pieter Sonneveld. As the van Pelts moved onto the Margrietstraat in 1936 and Leendert’s father died on May 25, 1936, this photo had to have been taken almost immediately after the move to the Margrietstraat, and immediately before Leendert’s father’s death.
