Five Brothers and a War

Vacation in Belgium

With Germany’s move into Austria and Czechoslovakia, another vacation to Germany was not possible, even if it was attractive, which it was not. Just months before Germany invaded Poland, and thereby triggered the formal war, the van Pelts went on holiday in southwestern Belgium to the town of Bouillon, located in the Ardennes, which would play a critical role in the war.

The distance between Den Haag and Bouillon is about 261kilometers (162 miles) in a straight line.

The town is dominated by a castle, Château de Bouillon, a medieval castle dating back more than 1,000 years. It was first mentioned in history in 988, though a castle was situated there for far longer.
