Five Brothers and a War

Atlantikwall

This eviction notice for a part of Den Haag was fairly typical, although this one gives two months’ notice. This eviction was done on the order of the commander of the Wehrmacht in Holland, through the Reichskommissar, Seyß-Inquart. As bad as it was in Den Haag, it could be even worse. Some people were given only five days’ notice to vacate their property, as can be seen by this eviction notice for the town of Piershil, located about 31 km south-south-east of Den Haag. This farming town not only had to evacuate their homes, but their barns as well—during a very cold week in the winter. They had to move their animals, their food, and all of their possessions by whatever means they had at their disposal for (nefarious) German defensive purposes.
