Five Brothers and a War
Dirk van der Lecq
On the return leg of the trip, the road was strafed by RAF fighter planes, killing a number of travelers. Dirk was quick enough to dismount his tricycle and get into an adjacent ditch. Severely shaken, he finally made it back home. He took his share of the food and distributed the portions he had to split with the owner of the tricycle and the doctor who made the arrangements. The end result was very meager, but it could have been significantly worse, so all-in-all, the trip was worthwhile. A month or so later, the food was again gone. One day, Jeanne opened her pantry doors only to find absolutely no food. She prayed that God would provide something for her to be able to feed her family. A short time later, her brother, Frans, rang the doorbell to deliver food fresh from the farm. The telephones were not working and there was no mail delivery. Frans decided on his own to make the journey to help his sister.
