Five Brothers and a War
Razzias
The Nazi unit tasked with conducting razzias was the Ordnungspolizei , or the “Order Police”, although depending on the size of the raid, other units would be used as well. While the name “Order Police” would suggest that they were actually interested in maintaining order, in a similar way that a modern police force in a civilized society would, the reality was that they terrorized the populace. They reported to the SS, so civilized practices were not a part of the equation. They were generally and colloquially known as the Grünenpolizei (“Green Police”) due to the dark green color of their uniforms.
German civilian intercepts were possible at any given moment— both for Jews at the beginning of the war, until they were exterminated, or men between the ages of 17 and 40 during the last years of the war.
