Five Brothers and a War
The Second Razzia at Home
On one afternoon, the Grünenpolizei went to the Tomatenstraat to carry out a search for male citizens. At the conclusion of their search there, they were speaking German among themselves—a conversation overheard by the housewife. She heard them say that their next stop would be at the van Pelts on the Margrietstraat. As soon as they left her house, the woman looked at the telephone book to see if she could find any van Pelts on the Margrietstraat. Once she found the number, she immediately called over to offer a warning. Meanwhile, Immie Tadema had just arrived home from school and noticed activity on the outside of the van Pelt’s backyard fence, from which her house had a perfect vantage. She told her mother that something was going on there and then saw two or three Grünenpolizei scaling the back fence.
