Of the half-million Dutch who were enslaved, 30,000 never returned. Monuments have been erected for the “dwangarbeiders” (“forced laborers”) in several places, including the former site of the zoo.
In the village of Overloon, near Eindhoven. “We must forgive, however we will never forget.” The plaque on the ground says: “DWANGARBEID 1940-1945 Ruim 500.000 Nederlanders werden gedwongen tewerkgesteld in Duitsland. Meer dan 30.000 van hen kwamen om door honger, mishandeling, ziekte en oorlogsgeweld.” (“FORCED LABOR 1940-1945 At least 500,000 Dutch people were forced into labor service in Germany. More than 30,000 of them died due to hunger, abuse, sickness and war.”)
