Five Brothers and a War

Leen and Kees— Onderduikers

van Pelt

Although being a farmer, JanKees and his family did not have large food reserves to ride out the war, at least not to get them through to the summer’s harvest. They had grown their own potatoes, beets, carrots and other vegetables for their own consumption. JanKees offered Leen and Kees a modest meal that included very fresh bread and milk, which the two lapped up. They were extremely hungry and dead tired, and when JanKees offered them a double bed in his guestroom, they collapsed for the night. The fresh food did, however, have an effect on Kees’ digestive tract, and he needed to use the facilities frequently that night—the one outdoors, as the farmhouse had no indoor plumbing.
