Occupation vs. Liberation

The position of the Germans and the Allies after the push of autumn 1944 stretched from the North Sea to Germany through the south center of Holland. For reference purposes, Ottoland was only about 18 km (11 miles) from the front. This left the majority of the population under Nazi occupation, and millions hungry during the Hongerwinter .

In round numbers, of the 9M Dutch at the time, 2M were free and were properly fed, 3.5M lived in the north and east and were adequately fed, and another 3.5M were increasingly hungry—1.8M in Zuid Holland, 1.4M in Noord Holland and .3M in Utrecht.
