Making matters all the worse was that so many people were in hiding, which also meant that their food rations were not received. One of the methods the Germans used to capture Dutch males was through the ration card system. If the rations were picked up, the person was alive, well, and nearby. While they could not claim their rations, they still had to eat, meaning that the meager food that was available had to be shared.
