The ticket inserted onto the inner cover of the passport was written by an Englishman in order to allow Jan to travel out of Germany.
In an attempt to avoid work in a munitions factory, Jan gave his profession as “tuinder”, or “gardener”. The area of Zuid Holland was well known as a vegetable and flower gardening

area. The Germans,
coincidentally, needed farmers and gardeners to replace men who
were in the Wehrmacht.
