Jan’s Liberation

The stamp was put into Jan’s passport by the Germans. “Aufenhaltserlaubnis” means “Residency Permit”. It was valid in the “Kreis Tübingen” or in the “Circle of Tübingen”—the area around the town of Tübingen. This permit was issued on September 1, 1943 and was valid until the passport expired, June 17, 1945. Ironically, Jan was freed about ten weeks prior to the expiration date. The permit was signed by a police department representative from the “Ausländeramt”

van Pelt

or “Foreigner Department.”

Jan left Germany on April 25, 1945 .
