the war

Lt. General Charles Foulkes began his army career in 1923 as a private. When the Second World War broke out, he had risen to the rank of captain. He was the only person to be promoted through so many ranks, to Lt. General in that war. Through Canada's history, there had only been four army Generals up to the end of that war. One was promoted after the Boer War, one after World War I, and two during World War II—McNaughton and Crerar (who was Foulkes' commanding officer). There was also an admiral and an air chief marshal, both equivalent to full army general. Foulkes would be promoted to full general (thus the fifth ever) in the mid-1950s.
