Five Brothers and a War

Postscript: Pieter “Piet” van Pelt (1921-1979)

Ivy Hill Cemetery (Section 1, Lot: 38, Site: 3) Piet is buried next to his wife, Hendrika Marie “Henny” (Bender) van Pelt in the Ivy Hill Cemetery, located in Alexandria, Virginia, USA. The cemetery holds the remains of 57 veterans of the Confederate States of America, who fought against the Union in the American Civil War. By pure coincidence, they were buried in the same cemetery as the developer of the V-2 rocket, Wernher von Braun— Ivy Hill Cemetery (Section T, Lot: 29, Site: 5) . Von Braun went on to be instrumental in the United States space program, NASA, and the moon landings. The two gravesites are approximately 125 meters apart. Von Braun died June 16, 1977, 28 months before Piet.
