Five Brothers and a War
History—Delfshaven
The waterway from Delfshaven snakes its way past the Oudekerk and what would be the van Pelt home from 1928-30 on the Havenzichtstraat (“Harborview Street”) up to Delft, which is shown with the very small red marker almost in line with the two close pins. Beyond Delft is Den Haag, which is located on the North Sea, which can be seen on the horizon. The yellow pin on the left foreground is the Oudekerk in Delfshaven, and the one in the distance is the van Pelt wartime home on the Margrietstraat in Den Haag. For scaling purposes, the distance between the two homes is about 20 km (12 miles). On July 22, 1620, the Pilgrims departed from the Delfshaven quay on the ship Speedwell , on their way to meet with the Mayflower in Southampton, England. The two ships departed for America on August 15, but because the Speedwell leaked so badly, both ships returned to Dartmouth, England. It was decided that only the Mayflower would go on. Some of the pilgrims gave up, and the remaining passengers of the two ships crowded onto the one. They left one month later, on September 16.
