VICENTE ROMERO

Tranquility

The hallmark of modern life is the pace with which it occurs. Change is not simply constant, it is ever-increasing in speed and scope. So much of the essence of life is now hectic, with little time for the things that ultimately set us apart as humans. With the impact of the “big things” in life, there is seemingly no time for the “little things.” Distances are measured in minutes or hours. Deadlines are ubiquitous in personal and professional settings. Schedules are increasingly harried, where double-booking is all too common. Enter Vicente Romero. His art is so universally-acclaimed and appreciated because it represents a respite from modern life. He captures the very heart of calmness. His peacefulness is all encompassing. Adding a Vicente work to a home or office creates an oasis that wholly separates the viewer from the rat race of normal life. Owners drink in the beauty Vicente captures so eloquently, and then they feel their composure return in a measure that allows them to feel rejuvenated. And that is the definition of tranquility .

VICENTE ROMERO

the vision the art the man

Vicente Romero The Art of Life and Light

Vicente Romero Redondo has captivated millions of people around the world with his remarkable insight and talent. The translucence of fabric, the shimmering waters and the capturing of a single moment in time sets him apart. Vicente was born in Madrid in 1956, and he quickly gravitated toward art as he filled gaps in school time with his sketches. His formal art training came in Faculty of Fine Arts of San Fernando, where Salvador Dalí studied, albeit ever so briefly. While Vicente’s academics began in sculpture, they quickly moved to painting, which he mastered on his way to graduation. While he paints with both oil and pastel, his pastels have become his trademark. Ever so delicate, he can coax details from the medium that envelop viewers’ imaginations. His lightness and light invite emotional reactions of calm enjoyment and appreciation. His challenge has been that so few people can acquire his works, because of the time and effort he infuses into every one of his masterpieces. That has now changed. Not because of a lowering of his standards, but because he is authorizing exclusive limited editions to be produced. Each will be personally signed by Vicente, both on the face of the print and on the reverse, meaning that every print will have an original signature, and will therefore be unique. Each will be issued with a Certificate of Authenticity, also with the signature by the hand of Vicente. These prints will be made in the highest caliber giclée methods on archival, acid-free Hahnemühle canvas, stretched onto wooden bars, to ensure they can not only be enjoyed throughout your lifetime, but also the lifetimes of your grandchildren and indeed, your great-grandchildren. Because these are authorized limited editions, once they are gone, there will never be another ownership opportunity.

. . . in his own words

I am a Spanish painter, born in Madrid in 1956. At that time, it was not unreasonable for a family of modest means to be able to send their children to university for higher education. This was true in my case, and in 1982 I finished my degree in sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. Very soon thereafter, the necessities of survival forced me to paint portraits on the streets of the Iberian coasts, as well as on the islands of Ibiza and Tenerife. Those years of semi-nomadic life moved me away from sculpture—an activity that requires an artist to live in a fixed location. On the other hand, all those years served to familiarize me with the techniques of pastel art, which I had never used before. I found that medium suited my sensitivities very well. I then settled down on the Costa Brava, a peaceful and radiant place whose great luminosity has deeply transformed my vision of light and color. From a very early age, I was naturally attracted to the world of women. While mysterious, I find it greatly fascinating. I don’t believe in art which is too conceptual nor steeped in virtuosity. I can respect art that does not communicate emotionally, but I’m not interested in undertaking it myself. The fact that, iconographically, my paintings have a marked “retro” or anachronistic flavor it is not due to a desire on my part to revive old times. Stylistically, I consider myself as a very classical painter. My most admired artists are mainly those from the 17 th century—especially Rembrandt and Velázquez. This is because I understand that it is the culmination of the developments of the Renaissance. Classical Greek sculpture, particularly the pediments of Phidias’s Parthenon—the zenith of our artistic tradition—has also sculpted me. Although I was born in the interior of the country, my life in the Mediterranean has allowed be to be progressively seduced by the explosion of light and color that simulates me every day. That’s why I understand that my paintings may often seem impressionistic, but nothing could be further from the truth. I admire the influence of the Impressionists because they liberated light and color. However, drawing as a support for painting is practically absent in the work of artists like Monet. For me, drawing, in its various aspects, must be the structural foundation on which a painting is built. For this reason, other artists who are lumped in with Impressionism, like Manet, Degas, Cézanne or Sorolla himself, interest me much more because they never disregarded the drawing aspects of art! Why I Use Pastel Although I also use oil as a pictorial medium, the freshness and immediacy of pastel is unmatched. It is the most direct pictorial technique—the only one in which the artist works with pure pigments. This brings some important advantages. First, wet painting techniques are hampered by the shifting of color when the paint dries. The paint may darken, lose brightness or get yellowish. Pastel, on the other hand, being a dry medium, remains unchanged. Second, pastel gives the artist the freedom to work at his own pace without being forced to adapt to the drying cycles of the wet mediums. Thus, there is no need for the artist to rush if he wants to paint “ alla prima ” and no need to wait for the paint to dry. There are no conditioning factors that constrain the freedom of the artist to express emotions or ideas spontaneously. Finally, the feelings experienced are only comparable to clay modeling, because no additional tools or instruments are necessary—your bare hands and some pastel sticks are all that is needed!

Master of the Pastel Medium

Spanish figurative artist Vicente Romero is a master of oil painting, but it is his ability to use pastels that truly sets him on a pedestal. In early 2020, he was voted to be the first Pastelist Master of Spain! He coaxes out the very essence of his subjects’ souls through his pastel paintings as they leap from his easel, having been blessed with their first breaths of life. His use of light is astounding—at once dancing on the ocean’s waves as they crash onto the seacoast, and simultaneously glowing through the translucent patterned fabrics worn by his models. He captures a single second in time—an ephemeral moment that will never repeat itself in all of human history—in a manner that will never get old, fade, or tire. Most artists eschew pastel painting as it is a difficult medium in which to be extraordinary. Whether working on color pastel paintings or pastel drawings, it is a rare artist who can stand above the others the way Vicente Romero does. To be sure, there have been great artists through the centuries who excelled in the medium. For example, there was Jean-François Millet, the amazing pre-Impressionist Barbizon icon who used pastels almost exclusively during a four-year period in the 1860s, having completed some 90 works in pastel. Later, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, who had his start in the Barbizon School, which flowed seamlessly into Impressionism, found that he could complete wonderful pastel studies in preparation for his oil masterpieces. In fact, his famous The Great Bathers, which took more than three years to complete in the mid-1880s, was preceded by various studies of the subject using pastels. Of course, Edgar Degas was the one who really left his mark with pastels, having used the medium as his primary means of creating an enormous number of pastel drawings. Artists find that the color and texture range that can be used in pastels allows for a richness unique to the medium. Hence the reason why some Impressionists were so enamored with the results, as the Impressionist’s color palette had grown so wide with the technological developments of new pigments and the means to store them. If there is one thing that jumps off of the canvas of the Impressionists, it is their amazing utilization of spectacular colors. Pastels are essentially pure pigment held together with some form of binding. In the case of the soft pastels, such as the ones used by Vicente Romero, his very rich pigments are bound with tragacanth gum, which allows the pigment to take the form of a stick that can be readily grasped. Others use a hard pastel, which uses significantly less pigment, instead using a greater percentage of binding. This results in art that has less richness of color, but can be used effectively in creating detail work. One of the more recent developments in pastels is the “oil pastel”, which again has less pigment and uses an oil binder. Oil pastels will eventually get as hard as oil paint, though the process might take years. As might be expected, oil pastels require solvents to dissolve, whereas soft pastels use water. Finally, pencil pastels are just what they sound like—somewhat hardened pastel pigment wrapped in pencil wood. This allows for fine details to be applied using sharpened points on the pencils. Ultimately, for artists to be successful, they must find the means of expressing their visions in a manner that can be appreciated by the viewer. In the case of Vicente Romero, the longer the viewer views, the more appreciative they become, as they witness greatness.

Having resided on Spain’s Costa Brava for years, his oeuvre has been praised for conveying rare beauty and serenity, while utilizing the vivid luminosity distinctively seen in the art of fellow Mediterranean masters. Vicente has been exhibited with honors across borders in Europe, Asia, North America and beyond. Vicente Romero Redondo is internationally-known for his pastel depictions of graceful women at solitary moments, in romantic surroundings, adorned with elegant attire.
