Five Brothers and a War
Move to Margrietstraat 20
As Germany was preparing for war, the van Pelt family was preparing to move from the Tomatenstraat to a new development on the very edge of town on the Margrietstraat. There were ten brand new homes on that street, and eight on the next one over—the Speenkruidstraat. Dutch street numbers follow the street name, hence the house was Margrietstraat 20. This neighborhood was the Bohemen en Meer en Bos (“Bohemia and Lake and Forest”). Meer en Bos is a large city park, which, as its name suggests, contains thousands of trees, and a pond. Den Haag is comprised of a number of districts, including the Fruit District, in which can be found the Tomatenstraat. Others include the Composer District, the Tree District, the Painter District, the Bird District, among others. Interestingly, there is a Flower District and a West Flower District. The district containing the Margrietstraat only has plant names for streets, but is west of the West Flower District.
